CHMOD – Permissions

CHMOD – Permissions

An often asked question from the beginning webmaster is about setting permissions. This is usually referred to as CHMOD. CHMOD is a unix command that allows the webmaster to control how much or how little access should be permitted to a specific file.

For instance you want your pages to display so the general public can see and use whatever site functions and scripts you may have on your site (permissions = read and execute) , but you would not want everyone to be allowed to change your content (permissions = read, write, and execute). So you would set your site to the correct permission to allow only read and execute.

There are a couple of ways in which you can set these permissions.

1. When uploading your file using an FTP program

2. From your CPANEL

For many first time webmasters CPANEL is the fastest and easiest way in which to set a permission. But you still need to read and understand the basic UNIX file commands so you are able to set your permissions correctly.
