Blogs For Writers
Professional authors need their own websites – this is a given. But what about the aspiring writer, should they also invest the time and money into getting their own personal site?
In my opinion the answer is a simple yes. The cost of hosting your own blog ( which is all any writer really needs) is minimal. For example The Megaphone Network provides blog hosting for $4.99 a month with no set up fees or hidden charges. And with this plan you control all aspects of your site. Sure this is a great price but why is it so important that the aspiring writer get their own personal site?
1. Presentation is often times your first selling point. It does not matter if you’re selling apples from your veggie stand or selling yourself and your writings to the general public, excellent presentation is a must. And you will find it hard to present your work in a professional manner on the free sites that are filled with banner ads and pop ups. Simply put, your guest will usually not stay very long and a publisher would certainly not spend the time navigating pop ups to view your work.
2. Your email address is a dead giveaway. Using yahoo, hotmail or other free email address for professional business is really not a great idea. For instance The Cuckleburr Times is an online magazine that publishes the works of authors and writers. Both professional and unpublished but aspiring writers submit there. And we can often times tell simply by the submission email address whether the person submitting is a professional or not. Nine times out of ten if the submission is from a free email account the author will not have their own website for us to preview their work or if they do, it will be some place like My Space, Xanga or some other free advertising supported blog.
If your business is writing then each piece you submit to any publisher should be of the highest possible quality you can deliver and to do this you will need your own site hosted on a server that you control.
