Backup Your Data
We recently did a blog on a new virus that is out there infecting people when they simply click a link from a search engine. More than likely the virus is not getting set on your computer from clicking the link but when the page you’re going to visit starts loading, which is almost a simultaneous happening.
This does bring up a point that can not be stressed enough about backing up your data and setting restore points on your computer.
Backing up your data is a simple process in which you download your files to a CD. This way if something does infect your computer beyond recovery you will be able to reinstall your valuable data from the backup disk.
Creating computer backup points is also another option that is available on many computers and on most anti-virus software. Check either your computer or your anti-virus software to make sure you have this option and that you have it setup and enabled. You can set this to happen automatically at intervals you desire. I would recommend at least a weekly restore point.
Which is best? Both do different things really. While setting a restore point is in fact a backup of your data, what it does is restore your computer to the setting and files it had on at a given point. The theory here being that if your anti-virus software may be able to backup your computer to a given date before you become infected, thereby rendering the virus ineffective and restoring functionality to your computer so you can isolate and remove the infected files. If this works great!
With a full backup to CD you know then you have all your files if something major does happen and you lose the computer.
Remember preventative measures can save you a lot of time and money so make sure you check your settings for restore points and backups.
